Stepping Up
The Stepping Up Program follows the example, guidelines, trainings and recommendations set forth by the national Stepping Up Initiative. Our program currently employs a Master’s Level Social Worker who works with a Community Collaborative made up of multiple community agencies and individuals to develop a system of policies, procedures and services to help reduce the number of individuals with a serious mental illness that frequent local jails and hospital emergency rooms secondary to their mental illness issues.
Tuscaloosa County has been declared a Stepping Up Community by the Tuscaloosa County Commission and we have national recognition for such through the national Stepping Up Initiative. Our Stepping Up program has partnered with the Tuscaloosa County jail and DCH emergency rooms to streamline the identification of individuals needing these intensive services and make timely referrals to engage these individuals in our services to prevent repeated trips to jail and or the emergency departments.
